Chapter V

Pages 62-9: The journey

Just after David has left Blunderstone Rookery on the cart, Peggotty bursts out and gives him money from his mother and food for the road.

The carrier uses David to tell Peggotty that he is “willing”. David does not understand it is an offer of marriage.

He leaves David at an inn where a waiter eats and drinks all the dinner that was bought for him and even steals money from him.

David leaves on the coach for London. The other passengers have heard that David has eaten an enormous dinner and make fun of him. As a consequence, he is too ashamed to eat at the next stop.
