Traddles

Steerforth

·        respected and admired by the whole school

·        makes David tell him the stories of the novels he has read

Steerforth is humiliating Mr Mell before the whole school on account of his impoverished mother.

Mr Creakle takes sides with Steerforth and even fires Mr Mell.

·        David has visitors: Daniel and Ham Peggotty. He introduces them to Steerforth.


II. Chapter VIII

Time: the holiday after David’s first half-year at Salem

Main information:

·        Main plot: David’s mother has had a baby (a boy).

·        Subplot: Peggotty has not answered Barkis’s offer. She does not want to leave Clara.

characters:

Miss Murdstone

·        counts the days until David goes back to school.

·        forbids David to touch the baby.

Mr Murdstone

·        forbids David to spend time with Peggotty.

Clara

·        She is under the Murdstones’ influence.

While unable to criticize them, she on the other hand has no confidence in herself
