Chapter IX
Time: David’s birthday
(in March)
Events:
David’s mother and brother die.
David returns home for the funeral.
Miss Murdstone fires Peggotty.
When Peggotty leaves Blunderstone Rookery, she takes
David with her to Yarmouth for two weeks. Mr Barkis takes them there and wooes
Peggotty.
Peggotty discusses her possible marriage to Barkis
with David. It would have three advantages:
·
She would be
independent.
·
She would live
near David.
·
She could visit
him easily thanks to Mr Barkis’s horse and cart.
David renews his relationship with Little Em’ly, although they are a little less intimate.
Peggotty marries Barkis. Peggotty sets up a room for
David in their house.
Peggotty discovers that her husband is “a little
near”, in other words miserly.
David returns to Blunderstone Rookery where he is
neglected.
Finally Mr Quinion, who runs Mr Murdstone’s counting
house in London, gives David a job.
