Chapter XXXVIII

_________________ has uncovered David’s affair with Dora through _________________’s spying. He forbids David to continue seeing _____________ and threatens to write her off his _________ and send her ___________. Nevertheless, David refuses / agrees / hesitates to comply with Mr Spenlow’s orders because he loves Dora and has pledged his love to her.

The following morning, David learns that Mr. Spenlow has ________ in a carriage _____________. It is discovered that Mr Spenlow had in fact written no ________ and that he had very much / little left to bequeath his daughter. ______________ is upset and refuses to see David.

Chapter XXXIX

David goes to _________ to check on _________________.

He then goes to _________________ to visit ________________. At Mr. Wickfield’s, David finds that ________________ and __________________ have taken control. ____________________ has become a tenant at Mr. Wickfield’s house and __________’s tool.

_________________ keeps strict watch on Agnes by never letting her be alone. Uriah admits to David that he wanted to prevent _____________ from getting ahead of him with __________. David swears to him that he is already ______________ to someone else.

Later, when Uriah, Mr. Wickfield, and David are alone together, Uriah gets _________________ drunk, toasts __________, and announces his intention to _________ her. _______________ becomes hysterical at this suggestion and tells David how much control ____________ has managed to establish over him. _____________ threateningly warns ________________ to keep quiet and not insult him.

Chapter XL

David writes to _____________ for permission to visit them as a way to get close to _________ again.

Late one night, he runs into _____________, who says that he has been looking for _____________ on the continent. He has come close to finding her a few times.

Little Em’ly has sent three letters containing __________ to the Peggottys. _____________ has replied to one of the letters under _________’s dictation, telling Little Em’ly that her uncle misses her terribly and will forgive her if she comes back.

Meanwhile, David sees ____________ listening at the inn door. She disappears, and ___________________ goes off to a cheap inn where he can stay for the night before he sets off again on his journey / goes back home.
